The 2001 cranberry harvest brought some new challenges to Cliffstar, as I’m sure it did to many growers as well.  The major challenge, of course, was the Cranberry Marketing Order, allowing growers to deliver only 65% of their crop.  Crop sizes varied not only by growing area, but also by grower.  Trying to match up the amount of cranberries out there, with the amount growers could deliver and Cliffstar could receive was difficult at least, but somehow we managed to accomplish it.

Another new challenge for Cliffstar this year was the addition of many new growers who were previously delivering to Hiller Bros.  Fortunately, with the help of Bob and Rob Hiller, this was accomplished with few problems.  I would like to thank the new growers for joining Cliffstar, and hope you all were satisfied with the service you received.

The Freetown facility, under the supervision of the Ashleys, had challenges of it’s own with the smaller than usual crop.  It took some good planning and cooperation to reduce hours of operation, and yet receive the fruit conveniently from the growers.

In Wisconsin, this is the first year the 5-Star receiving station was operated by Cliffstar.  With Henry Knoepker continuing to manage that facility, I am sure there was little difference, if any, from previous years.  Henry and his crew, once again did a marvelous job in coordinating the receiving and dispersing of all the fruit.

Cliffstar added some new growers in Quebec, Canada this year, which also brought a few challenges.  New receiving facilities, new truckers and new warehouses to name a few!  At time it was a bit confusing, but with everyone’s help and hard work it was done well.

Al Farber and the growers in Oregon again did their part to help Cliffstar receive the required amount of fruit.  It’s a relief knowing that someone 3000 miles away is doing a job for you that you can count on being done well.  That is very much appreciated by those of us back here in Dunkirk.

I don’t want to forget George Adams Sr. and Jr. in New Jersey, our only growers in the Garden State.  Another job well done by them.

We at Cliffstar would like to thank all of those who helped us accomplish another successful harvest.  From the many growers, to the receiving stations, to the truckers and the warehouses, thanks for a job well done!
